One Wrong Conversation Could Cost Your Son a Baseball Scholarship
I played 7 years of pro ball and 3 years D1. I’ve seen talented players lose college offers because of one bad conversation—often from what a parent says.
Mistake 1: Parents Do the Talking
Coaches recruit players, not parents. If your son can’t speak for himself now, coaches won’t trust he’ll lead himself in college. Let him lead the conversations.
Mistake 2: Unprepared for Basic Questions
If he doesn’t know his GPA, test scores, or how to talk about his game, he looks uncommitted. Every coach call is an interview. Be direct. Be ready.
Mistake 3: Negotiating Too Early
Bringing up money or comparing offers too soon kills interest. Show genuine excitement first. You can talk numbers later.
Bonus: Always Ask the Next Step
End every call or message by asking, “What’s the next step?” It shows initiative and keeps the conversation going.
