Travel Baseball Could Be Hurting Your Son’s Scholarship Chances
I’m Evan Mendoza…former pro with the Cardinals and Padres, D1 athlete at NC State, and now a coach helping high school players and families navigate recruiting the right way. After working with 200+ families, I see the same 3 mistakes over and over:
1. More games don’t mean more exposure.
Travel teams often overload players with tournaments, but playing 80 games a year won’t help if they’re not in front of college coaches. Worse, it leads to burnout and injuries. Focus on quality reps, not quantity.
2. Trusting coaches to “handle recruiting” is a trap.
Coaches juggle too much to personally guide every player. Even with good intentions, they’re focused on winning—not emailing dozens of colleges for you. You need to take ownership of your recruiting strategy.
3. Travel ball alone won’t get you seen.
If you’re not contacting coaches before events, they won’t know to watch. Just showing up isn’t enough. Communication is what gets you recruited…not just playing games.
