The Email That Gets College Coaches To Actually Respond

I was undersized, overlooked, and uncommitted going into my senior year of high school.

I didn’t have a recruiting plan. I didn’t understand the process. And I made mistakes that cost me time I didn’t have.

That’s why I talk about this.

Here’s what a recruiting email actually needs to look like.

Start with their name. Not “Dear Coach.”

Purdue’s head coach has said publicly that the second he sees “Dear Coach” he knows it’s a copy paste job and it’s gone.

Use the last name at minimum. But if you want to separate yourself go one step further — find something specific about that coach and mention it in the first line. That one sentence tells him this email was written for him specifically.

Keep the body clean.

Coaches get hundreds of emails a month. They are not reading paragraphs.

Give them graduation year, position (no more than two), travel ball organization, key measurables, GPA, and one sentence that tells them exactly what kind of player your son is.

Not 14 sentences. One.

Include the right links.

Short labeled highlight video. Trusted profiles like Perfect Game or PBR. Social media. A profile picture that puts a name to a face.

Coaches are evaluating your son from the second they see his name. The email is part of that evaluation.

Close with intention.

Reference the specific school. “I look forward to developing my skills at NC State” hits differently than a generic sign off.

Done right this takes under an hour a week.

And it’s the most controllable thing your son can do in recruiting right now.
