Why College Coaches Aren’t Responding To Your Son’s Emails
If your son is sending emails and hearing nothing back there’s a reason.
And it’s fixable.
“Dear Coach” is killing your response rate.
The second a coach sees it he knows it’s a copy and paste job. That’s not who gets recruited.
Use the last name at minimum. But if you want to stand out go one step further…find something specific about that coach and mention it in the opening line.
“I saw you got drafted in 1999 and made your debut with the Red Sox in 2004. That must have been a great memory.”
That one sentence tells the coach this email was written specifically for him.
When I was with the Cardinals the bench coach Mike Schildt introduced himself knowing exactly where I played, where I went to school, and how I got drafted.
That preparation left an impression. Your son’s email can do the same.
Metrics not stats.
Coaches don’t care that your son hit .450 last spring. They care about exit velocity, 60 time, arm velocity, height, weight, and GPA.
Stats tell a story about a high school game. Metrics tell a coach what kind of athlete he’s looking at.
Then have your son write one sentence in his own words that shows baseball IQ.
Something like “I’m known for reading dirt balls, taking the extra base, and putting pressure on the defense.”
That line alone tells a coach your son understands the game at a deeper level.
Direct them where to go.
30-second highlight video. Perfect Game or PBR profile. Social media. A profile picture that puts a name to a face.
Every link is a micro-commitment that keeps the coach engaged a little longer.
Done right reply rates can reach 8%.
That’s not luck. That’s a system.
