The 3-Step Mental Reset System Every High School Baseball Player Needs

I’ve seen it happen countless times.

A player strikes out. Walks back to the dugout. Shuts down completely.

What most players and parents don’t realize is that one scout watching that game just crossed your son off their list.

Not because of the strikeout.

Because of what happened after it.

There is so much failure in baseball. The players who get recruited aren’t the ones who never fail.

They’re the ones who know how to flush it and move on.

Here’s the three-step system I share with my own athletes.

Step 1: The 10-Second Rule.

Give yourself 10 seconds after a bad at-bat. Use them. Evaluate what went wrong, what pitch you chased, what count you got yourself into.

Then let it go.

Most players will replay that at-bat for hours after the game. Days even. And that’s where one bad moment turns into a week of bad baseball.

A 10-year big leaguer once told me…look at the O on the scoreboard for outs and picture your thoughts disappearing into a toilet. Sounds ridiculous.

But it worked for him. It can work for your son.

Step 2: The Single Focus Phase.

When your son is hitting he can’t be thinking about fielding. When he’s fielding he can’t be thinking about his last at-bat.

One bad at-bat bleeds into the field. One error bleeds into the next plate appearance. This is one of the most common things that derail high school players at every level.

The job is simple. Whatever is happening right now that’s the only thing that matters.

Step 3: The Next Pitch Mentality.

This one came from NC State and it’s my favorite.

Whatever just happened you cannot change it. It’s in the rearview mirror.

All you control is the next pitch.

For pitchers especially this is everything.

When the other team starts chanting and the game starts speeding up that’s when most pitchers unravel.

The ones who stay locked in understand that their only job is to execute the next pitch.

Control the pace. Control the thoughts. Execute.

A note for parents.

The fastest way to make all of this harder is yelling from the bleachers.

Baseball is already one of the most difficult games to play mentally. Don’t add to the noise. Let the coaches coach. Let your son compete.

Your presence matters. Your voice from the stands during a tough at-bat doesn’t help…it makes an already hard game harder.

The mental side of baseball is a muscle. Train it the same way you train the physical.
