Why Great Players Still Go Unrecruited

Talent Isn’t Enough Anymore

One of the biggest recruiting myths I hear is:

“If I’m good enough, coaches will find me.”

Unfortunately, that’s not how college recruiting works anymore.

College coaches are evaluating thousands of players every year. The players who get noticed aren’t always the most talented—they’re often the players who make the recruiting process easier.

Here are three things every serious player should be doing right now:

  1. Know Your Numbers

College coaches want measurable data before anything else.

For pitchers, that means velocity.

For position players, that means exit velocity, 60-yard dash time, and arm strength.

If you don’t know your numbers, coaches can’t properly evaluate where you fit.

  1. Have a Clear Highlight Video

Skip the long montages, slow motion, and over-edited videos.

Keep it short, clean, and easy to evaluate.

Show your best clips first and make it simple for a coach to quickly understand what type of player you are.

  1. Communicate With Coaches

Don’t wait to be discovered.

Introduce yourself. Send emails. Share your schedule. Let coaches know where they can watch you play.

Recruiting rewards players who take ownership of the process.

The biggest advantage of all? Start early.

Most players wait until they feel “ready.” By then, many college programs have already built recruiting boards and identified the players they’re following.

Treat recruiting like part of your training.

Track your numbers. Develop your skills. Communicate consistently.

Because the players who approach recruiting with a plan are usually the players who end up playing at the next level.
