Last weekend I watched a dad do everything he thought he was supposed to do.
He spent the money. He drove thousands of miles. He showed up.
And three months later, his son still doesn’t have an offer. Still no plan. Still confused about why nobody’s calling.
The problem wasn’t the effort.
It was the target.
The families who lose out on college baseball aren’t the ones who didn’t try. They’re the ones who tried hard at the wrong things at the wrong time.
Here’s what the timeline actually looks like.
Freshman year is about getting into motion. Playing high school ball, figuring out your position, learning how to compete. That’s it.
Sophomore year is about building the foundation. Work ethic. Development. Understanding your metrics. This is when the skyscraper gets its base. Skip this and everything built on top of it is unstable.
Junior year is where you chip away and refine. Your metrics should be climbing. Your recruiting outreach should be consistent. Coaches should be hearing your name more than once.
Senior year is too late to start.
Most families hit the panic button right between junior and senior year. They spend the summer throwing money at showcases hoping someone notices.
But exposure without development is just activity. If your son’s metrics haven’t moved, a showcase isn’t going to change the outcome.
Development will always matter more than recruitment strategy.
A player who throws 90 gets recruited. A player who throws 75 but sends great emails is still throwing 75.
The plan has to start with the body.
Then the recruiting follows.
