Why Playing Time in High School Doesn’t Equal Exposure

Playing Time Is Not Exposure. Here’s What Actually Is.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in high school baseball recruiting.

A family invests in travel ball. Their son earns a starting spot. He’s playing meaningful games every week.

And they assume that means he’s getting exposure.

He’s not.

Playing time and exposure are not the same thing.

Exposure means a college coach knows your son exists. Playing time means he’s on a field somewhere.

Those are two completely different things.

Even the big travel ball tournaments aren’t what most families think.

College coaches show up to WWBA and Perfect Game events to watch specific players.

Once they’ve seen who they came for they leave. They’re not staying for the championship game.

Showcases are evaluation events. Not exposure events.

Evaluation happens when a coach is already watching.

Exposure is how you get the coach to show up in the first place.

And exposure can happen anywhere. Through direct email. Through social media.

Through consistent communication that keeps your son’s name in front of the right people before he ever steps on a field they’re watching.

If your son never reaches out coaches simply don’t know he exists. Not because he isn’t good enough. Because he never told them.

The recruiting pipeline only starts with exposure.

Exposure leads to evaluation. Evaluation sparks interest. Interest leads to a visit. A visit leads to a scholarship conversation.

None of that happens without the first step.

And the first step isn’t another showcase.

It’s making sure the right coaches know your son’s name.
